If your ideal December calls for lots of sunshine, California is the perfect destination. The best way to experience the state—a California road trip. Southern California will be warmer than NorCal with highs in the low 60s in San Francisco and mid to high 60s in San Diego. Perfect for sightseeing in the cities, strolling the beaches, and hiking the National and State parks without the summer crowds.
However, if you do want a white Christmas or to ski, from the major destinations like San Francisco, LA, or San Diego, you’re never more than a few hours from snowy mountains. You can have your sunshine while you ski down the slopes wearing nothing more than a sweater.
If you’re looking for holiday festivities, there are an abundance of activities. Many coastal harbor towns like Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, Sausalito, and San Diego light up with annual boat parades every year. For four weeks in December, the Monterey Wharf offers an array of free holiday entertainment such as singers, dancers, and musicians. In Ontario you can learn how to make candy canes, and in Solvang they make gingerbread house. Solvang also has a magical Christmas market as does San Francisco (Union Square), Santa Barbara, Big Bear, Sacramento, Riverside, Temecula, and more!
From ice skating rinks to amusement parks to performing arts centers, California gets in the holiday spirit. From charming Gold Rush towns to the state’s biggest cities, you’ll find the state wonderfully decorated. California is also home to some pretty famous Christmas trees. You can see the giant sequoia President Calvin Coolidge named the Nation’s Christmas Tree in Kings Canyon National Park. And visit the the tiny town of Ferndale in Northern California that boasts the highest live Christmas tree. Additionally, many other cities will have large trees shimmering in prominently places. There are so many, you’ll have a hard time choosing which to see!

Guatemala
by Jess from 90 Summers
December is the perfect time to visit Guatemala, given its squarely in the country’s dry season. Between the warm temperatures and the clear, sunny skies, you’ll have the perfect weather to explore the country’s volcanoes, lakes, and Mayan ruins.
Additionally, the holidays are a particularly festive time to visit Guatemala. Throughout December, you may stumble across elaborate parades in the streets for Christmas and get to enjoy lots of fireworks for New Years. Guatemala City is renowned for having an unbelievable amount of fireworks lighting up the sky to ring in the New Year.
Most travelers focus their attention on destinations in the south of the country. For example, the colonial city of Antigua is used as the springboard to explore its neighboring volcanoes, Pacaya and Fuego, the latter of which erupts every 15 to 20 minutes. Additionally, visitors flock to the small Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan, like San Marcos, which offers lots of yoga studios, reiki healing, and bohemian vibes or San Pedro, with some of the best (and most affordable!) Spanish schools in Central America.
That being said, don’t miss exploring other parts of the country. For example, the crystal clear turquoise pools of Semuc Champey in the rainforests of central Guatemala offer the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Additionally, the impressive Tikal ruins, found in northern Guatemala, is one of the biggest and best preserved Mayan archeological sites on the planet and is a must-stop for any history buff.
Given the lovely weather and festivities around Guatemala, it’s also typically one of the busiest times for tourism in the country. Be sure to book your accommodations well in advance. This is especially in more remote areas, like Semuc Champey or Flores, the gateway to Tikal, where accommodations are surprisingly limited and can sell out during the busier timeframes.
Colombia
Recommended by Carolin from happy when abroad
Visiting Colombia in December is a great idea as the country offers warm and dry weather and vibrant holiday festivities during that time of the year. December is one of the driest months in Colombia with average temperatures ranging from 75°F (24°C) to 86°F (30°C) depending on the region. It’s the ideal time for outdoor adventures and enjoying the stunning landscapes Colombia has to offer. On the one hand, the coastal areas like Cartagena and Santa Marta promise sunny skies and relaxing beach days. The highland regions, like Medellín and Bogotá, on the other hand, remain refreshing – perfect for hiking and city trips. You could start your adventure in Colombia’s capital city Bogotá, then continue through the coffee region’s scenic landscapes and the vibrant city of Medellín and end your trip with relaxing on the Caribbean beaches of the Rosario Islands and strolling through Cartagena’s colorful streets.
The festive season is also extensively celebrated in Colombia. The holiday celebrations start on December 7th with Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles), where people light hundreds of candles in the streets across the country. In Medellín you can witness El Alumbrado, a world-renowned holiday light show, that transforms the whole city with themed decorations along the Medellín River and in parks. All over the country you can find street parades, holiday markets and food events. Novena de Aguinaldos, for example, is a nine-day Christmas celebration, bringing locals together to sing carols and share traditional dishes.
From festive celebrations to great outdoor adventures, Colombia in December is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, visiting in Colombia in December means more crowds, as not only tourists but also many locals travel around the country. Booking your hotels and tours in advance is highly recommended.
Brazil

Brazil offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors in December, with its tropical weather and incredible festive celebrations. December in Brazil is summer, meaning hot, sunny days and temperatures that reach between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F) across most regions. This ideal weather makes it perfect for beach getaways in places like Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, and Bahia, where you can enjoy pristine sands, turquoise waters, and beachside parties.
One of the top highlights of visiting Brazil in December is celebrating the New Year, as Rio de Janeiro is home to one of the best New Year’s celebrations in the world! The 15 minute firework display across several beaches is simply magical, and the parties go all night long. December also marks the start of summer festivals, with vibrant parades, live music, and samba dancing, giving a preview of the famous Carnival spirit.

Peru
by Patricio from Sabiduri
December is one of the best times to visit Peru, offering an ideal mix of festive spirit, pleasant weather, and cultural experiences that make it a memorable destination.
One of the highlights of visiting Peru in December is the vibrant holiday festivities. Cusco, the former Inca capital, comes alive with Santuranticuy, one of the largest Christmas fairs in Latin America.
Held on December 24th, this event fills the main square with hundreds of artisans selling beautiful handmade crafts and nativity scenes, making it a perfect place to absorb the warmth of local traditions. Lima, the capital city, is also adorned with Christmas lights, and festive events bring a joyful atmosphere to its bustling streets.
Weather-wise, December marks the beginning of summer on the Peruvian coast, making Lima and the beaches ideal for a warm getaway. The Andes and Cusco regions experience the start of the rainy season, but the lush landscapes around Machu Picchu take on a vibrant green hue, creating stunning photo opportunities.
Despite some rain, the temperatures are mild, and the early showers tend to keep the crowds thinner, allowing a more relaxed exploration of iconic sites like the Sacred Valley and the Rainbow Mountains.
December also brings a festive vibe to towns across Peru, and you can experience a mix of local culture and traditional holiday celebrations. While popular areas like Cusco and Machu Picchu may still see visitors, the crowds are generally more manageable compared to peak months like July.
This balance between cultural immersion, festive celebrations, and fewer tourists makes Peru a fantastic choice for a December adventure."
Argentina

Argentina is one of the best countries to visit in December if you want a warm and laid-back destination to spend Christmas! Argentina’s location in the Southern Hemisphere makes December the beginning of the Argentinian summer with nice warm weather almost anywhere you decide to travel!
Argentina offers plenty of beautiful places to visit in December: From hiking in Patagonia and exploring unique wildlife on Peninsula Valdés to discovering the many unique things to do in Buenos Aires.
When in Buenos Aires in December, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the giant Christmas tree at Galerías Pacífico shopping mall. Apart from that, the Christmas decorations in shops and streets tend to be less in Argentina than in other countries.
In Argentina, Christmas Eve is celebrated on the evening of December 24. The celebrations on Christmas Eve also tend to be more relaxed and laidback in Argentina compared to other countries.
On Christmas Eve, many Argentinian families meet for a traditional Argentinian BBQ, also known as “asado”, by the pool or indoors with the AC on. At midnight, it is common to celebrate with a glass of champagne and watch fireworks.
If you are not eating asado on Christmas, it is common for Argentinian families to eat cold food. One of the most beloved Christmas meals in Argentina is the Italian “vitel thoné”, a dish made of slices of meat topped with a tuna-anchovy sauce. For dessert, you will normally have a “pan dulce”, a sweet bread with dried fruit or chocolate chips.
December is the beginning of the summer vacation for most Argentinians. Bigger cities like Buenos Aires and Mendoza are normally less crowded than normal during Christmas. But other tourist destinations popular among locals like the Iguazu Falls are likely to be more crowded during December.
So, if you are looking for a more laid-back Christmas, and can imagine yourself sipping cocktails by the pool and eating Argentinian asado (BBQ) on Christmas Eve, then Argentina is the perfect country for you to visit in December!

Norway
by Chris from Global Trip Diaries
Tromsø, in northern Norway, is a top spot for a December escape, especially if you’re after a true Arctic adventure. With long, dark nights, daylight is from 9-2 pm in December, it’s one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. December’s polar nights make it easier to catch the famous green and purple glow lighting up the sky. It’s a bucket list sight and an experience that should be on everyone’s to-do list.
December sees Tromsø transform and embrace the Christmas spirit. In keeping with tradition there is a Christmas market and the town is lit up with decorations. Slightly less traditional they also put on a special “Christmas Cinema”, with Christmas classics under the starry sky, wrap up warm and grab yourself a mulled wine or hot chocolate.
Beyond the Northern lights and Christmas cheer, Tromsø has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Dog sledding for those who enjoy a little adrenaline, top tip make sure you do a trip where you get to drive yourself. If you prefer a gentler pace, or something more Santa-themed, reindeer sleigh rides with Sámi guides are a great option, running both day and night. For something a bit faster, snowmobiling lets you see another side of the landscape, with the right tour you can venture deep into some of the local forests.
Back in the town, Tromsø has a cozy vibe, with plenty of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can warm up with local dishes like reindeer stew. If you fancy a bit of culture, the Polar Museum offers a peek into Norway’s history of Arctic exploration, while the Arctic Cathedral is worth a visit for its unique design and carol singing.
Spain
by Marina from Travel Eat Blog
Spain may not be the first destination that comes to mind for a December trip, but it’s well worth adding to your list. Unlike much of Europe, Spain enjoys mild winter weather in December, while still offering unique holiday festivities. In cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, daytime temperatures can be up to 15°C, perfect for sightseeing and strolling through holiday markets and illuminated plazas.
Holiday festivities across Spain bring a magical feel to the season and every region brings something unique to the celebration. In Madrid, be sure to visit the Plaza Mayor Christmas Market: wander through the historic square, savoring churros con chocolate as you browse stalls with holiday decorations and festive treats. In Barcelona, experience Fira de Santa Llúcia, a market dating back to 1786, with hundreds of parades and Catalonian holiday traditions like “caga tió” logs and festive treats like turrón. If you're visiting Valencia, Spain's third largest city, make time for the Feria de Navidad, featuring artisan crafts and an ice-skating rink.
In December, Spain has smaller crowds than in summer, so you’ll also have a chance to explore major attractions like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Prado Museum in Madrid in a more intimate atmosphere. Valencia's famous City of Art and Sciences is also not to be missed. Flights and accommodations are also often more affordable, and some hotels and tours offer discounts. If you've been wanting to visit Spain for a while, December is the perfect month to experience the country's unique mix of culture and traditions like a local.
Portugal
by Sonia founder of Carey On Travels
Portugal is wonderfully vibrant in December, with towns transformed by holiday lights and markets. December brings mild weather, fewer crowds, and off-peak pricing, allowing visitors to experience Portugal’s charm more intimately.
Average December high temperatures range from 10°C to 16°C (50°F to 60°F). The warmest and dryest weather is typically found in the Algarve and on Madeira Island. While it’s not beach and swimming weather, it can be ideal for exploring historic sites and for hiking, kayaking, and land-based sports. Winter in Lisbon and Porto tends to be cooler, perfect for exploring the cozy urban atmosphere and decorated streets without the summer heat. While you won’t find heavy snow, you can expect more rainy days than in summer.
Visitors can enjoy Christmas markets filled with local crafts and foods, with Portuguese Christmas classics such as bolo rei (king cake), rabanadas (French toast), and arroz doce (rice pudding). Some of the top Christmas markets are Porto’s Mercado de Natal and Lisbon’s A Magia do Natal. The cities come alive with giant holiday trees, light displays, and outdoor skating rinks. Many smaller towns host holiday markets too, such as Sintra, Óbidos, and Guimarães. A Christmas Fado show can be a highlight of any December trip to Portugal. New Year’s Eve celebrations include lively public parties, fireworks displays, and music, such as in Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio and overlooking the Douro River in Porto.
Without the summer crowds, the cities remain vibrant, but there’s room to breathe, explore, and engage with locals. Some small-town restaurants may close for the winter months. Staying in larger towns ensures plenty of restaurant and lodging options for your visit. While popular holiday events may attract crowds, the atmosphere remains relaxed and welcoming.
Scotland
by Moumita from Chasing the Long Road
With its vibrant Christmas Markets and stunning winter sceneries, visiting Scotland in December offers a unique experience. Also, fewer crowds in December make it more enjoyable to explore the popular tourist attractions in Scotland.
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, transforms into a winter wonderland around this time. You can find Edinburgh's Christmas market in the Princes Street Gardens at the heart of the city centre. There is an array of beautifully decorated chalets surrounded by market stalls and fairy lights. From traditional Christmas foods like German Sausages, potato skewers, hot mulled wine, and chimney cake to classic Christmas items like wooden nutcrackers, ornaments, and candles - you would be spoilt for choices.
Edinburgh Castle and Edinburgh Zoo host various special Christmas events for all age groups. You can enjoy the magical light trail in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Also, you can glide beneath twinkling lights and enjoy the colourful light installations at St Andrew Square.
You can also attend the Glasgow Christmas Markets. The two main locations for the markets are George Square and St Enoch Square. Stalls line the squares, selling everything from artisanal gifts to delicious festive food, creating a perfect setting for holiday shopping. It also features a large ice-skating rink, carnival rides, and a towering Christmas tree.
December transforms Scotland’s scenery into a winter wonderland, especially in the Highlands and Cairngorms National Park. Plus, Scotland has several ski resorts, such as Glencoe and the Nevis Range, which are often overlooked as winter destinations. Snow sports enthusiasts can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or even ice climbing in these breathtaking landscapes.
December weather in Scotland can be cold. Snow is common in higher altitudes, while cities experience frosty, crisp air with occasional rain showers.
Czechia
by Veronika from Travel Geekery
For those who don't mind cold temperatures, the Czech Republic is ideal to visit in December! Most cities bring out their best festive decor and there are cute Christmas markets everywhere.
Of course, you cannot leave out Prague - it's amazing at Christmas time. The Christmas markets start in late November and some of them last until January 6. However, tourists have already found out about the charm of Prague Christmas markets, so it does get crowded, especially at the most traditional market of them all - the Old Town Square Christmas market. But, you still have options even if you want to avoid crowds - e.g., the Christmas market at Náměstí Míru is a lot more local.
Other Czech cities are not much behind, though. They just lie off the beaten path for foreign tourists and if it ever gets crowded, it's with locals. E.g., Brno and Olomouc are both known for their wonderful Christmas markets, so do consider taking a trip to at least one of these cities!
If you get especially lucky, it may snow in the Czech Republic in December. Be aware that cities don't receive as much snow as the mountains, but in recent years even the mountainous areas don't have a thick enough snow cover and have to add artificial snow to the slopes. Speaking of slopes, you can engage in various winter sports as well. The Czech Republic has several mountain ranges - e.g., the Ore Mountains, the Giant Mountains, the Jeseník Mountains, etc. They are great for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and often even cross-country skiing, but one needs better snow conditions for that. There are ice rinks in many cities - in Prague at the Wenceslas Square, and in Brno and Olomouc just outside the very heart of the city.
When it comes to temperatures, they are likely to drop below zero (Celsius), but mostly at night. During the day, the temperature should hover around zero Celsius (32 °F) and may crawl up to 2.1°C (35.8°F). The key to staying warm in Prague in winter is layering and making occasional stops at Prague's numerous cafés.
Finland
by Pamela Directionally Challenged Traveler
One of the best countries to visit in December is Finland. This time of year is special because you can see the enchanting Northern Lights, especially in Lapland. The snowy landscapes are breathtaking, and you can feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. December is also when many holiday festivities take place, making it a joyful time to visit.
You can enjoy the Christmas markets in cities like Helsinki or spend one day in Turku, where you will find handmade crafts, delicious food, and warm drinks. One popular treat is glögi, a hot spiced drink that will keep you warm. You might also see Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, known as the official hometown of Santa. It’s a fun place for families, with reindeer rides and cozy cabins.
Crowds in December can vary. Popular attractions, like the Christmas markets and Santa’s Village, may be busy, especially closer to Christmas. Be prepared to wait for an hour if you want to sit on Santa’s lap in Rovaniemi. However, many outdoor activities, like skiing, snowshoeing, or dog sledding can be enjoyed with fewer people around. Be sure to book activities ahead of time as December is peak season. Finland is filled with breathtaking nature so feel free to find a quiet spot in nature to take in the beautiful scenery.
Don’t forget to stay up late and try to spot the Northern Lights. On a cold, clear night you have really good odds to see them in most of Finland, but especially up north!
The weather in December can be quite cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. Be sure to dress warmly with layers, hats, gloves, and boots. The Finnish people say that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
Visiting Finland in December offers a unique blend of culture, celebration, and stunning winter landscapes.
Italy
by Abbie & Jack from A Couples Calling
Italy is a beautiful country, famous for its rich history, ancient ruins, and delicious cuisine. Although you can head here at any time of year, there’s something special about visiting in December.
Italians know how to celebrate Christmas, so you can really get into the festive spirit. You’ll find bustling Christmas markets up and down the country, but the cities of Rome, Milan, and Florence offer some of Italy’s best markets.
Aside from the Christmas markets, you can enjoy delicious festive sweet treats (such as panettone), live nativity scenes, and traditional foods.
Not only that, but the festive season in Italy runs from the 8th of December until the 6th of January, so they celebrate Christmas for much longer than other countries. This is due to an old tradition, where it’s believed that Befana (a witch-like old woman) delivers presents to children in January, rather than Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.
Aside from the festivities, there’s the opportunity to enjoy Italy's many ski resorts at this time of year. There are around 300 recognised ski resorts in the country, with many of these being located in the Alps.
Better yet, December falls in Italy’s low season so you can expect fewer crowds (although the main tourist attractions can still be pretty busy). As there are less tourists, you’ll also witness a more authentic side to the country. There are some fantastic accommodation deals at this time of year too!
If you plan to visit Italy in December, just make sure you wrap up warm. The weather varies depending on where you are, but even in the southern regions, average temperatures typically fall between 12°C to 16°C. In the north, it’s much cooler, where you can expect temperatures between 3°C to 10°C.

Georgia
by Sam from Relentless Roaming
Georgia is the ultimate winter destination. It’ll be crisp and cold, and you might even see snow in the cities! But if you want to be sure that you’re going to get snow, jump in a marshrutka (a local minivan common in ex-Soviet republics), and head up to the Kazbegi mountains. Here you can ski or just behold the views of the majestic mountains with a warm drink in hand. Make sure you see historic Gergeti Trinity Cathedral perched on a hill with the mighty Mount Kazbek as the backdrop.
Did you know that Georgia is the birthplace of wine? The world’s oldest wine-making vessels have been found right here with archaeologists dating them to 6000 BC. So, Georgia knows how to do wine! But it’s not just the wine that’ll warm you up; Georgian cuisine is THE perfect comfort food. Think chewy breads with melted cheese (khachapuri), herby bean stews, huge chewy dumplings filled with broth and herby mushrooms. Georgian cuisine is great for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.
After all the skiing, and eating and drinking, soak yourself in Tbilisi’s thermal sulphur baths. Hire a private bath with a hot and cold pool because you will need respite from the 40°C/104°F thermal water! And if you’re looking for the full authentic experience, book a kisi scrub. It only lasts about ten minutes but it is a brutal experience that will leave you feeling baby soft afterwards.
Georgia is an Orthodox Christian country, which means that Christmas is not celebrated on 25th December; but the 7th January instead. Christmas markets and festivities start later in the month, but also carry on through the end of December and into the beginning of January. So, if you’re not quite ready for Christmas to be over, you could extend it with a trip to Georgia!
Estonia
Jess & Julia from The Lavender Travelers
Estonia is a perfect December destination you might not have considered. Picture centuries-old architecture dusted with snow and twinkling lights, creating the feel of a winter fairytale - the perfect, magical mix of history, nature, and winter experiences.
Visiting Estonia lets you escape the busier European Christmas markets, offering a festive yet less-crowded experience. The Christmas market in Old Town Tallinn, Estonia's capital city, runs from late November to just after Christmas. Here you’ll find carolers, warm drinks, local treats, and unique handicrafts for the perfect souvenirs.
For some outdoor fun, join the locals on the town center’s ice rink, or explore some cultural events like ballet, opera, and Gingerbread Mania - a quirky art exhibition where everything is made from gingerbread.
Beyond the city, Estonia’s snowy forests and frozen bogs offer an otherworldly setting for nature lovers. In Lahemaa National Park, guided winter hikes, snowshoeing, and bog-walking let you experience pristine, wintry landscapes in peaceful surroundings.
Saunas are also essential during cold Estonian winters. Many locals warm up in a sauna followed by an icy plunge or a roll in the snow. You can join this invigorating tradition at most spas and rural saunas across the country.
If you’re lucky, December is also a prime time to catch the northern lights on clear nights in darker areas away from city lights.
Estonia is quickly gaining popularity as a hidden gem in Europe, so be sure to visit before the crowds discover it!
Slovenia
by Lauren from The Adventure Manual
With its adorable Christmas markets and snowy landscapes, Slovenia is, without a doubt, one of the best countries to visit in December. This small European destination transforms into a winter wonderland. Better yet, crowd levels in December are fairly low as this country is not quite on most tourists’ radar.
Ljubljana, the capital, comes alive with festive markets and bustling streets decorated with twinkling lights. Stalls selling handmade crafts, mulled wine, and traditional Slovenian foods like potica (a nut roll) and kranjska klobasa (a local sausage) pop up all over the city. You will find Ljubljana’s main Christmas tree standing proudly in Prešeren Square – a must-visit at night when it is illuminated by the Triple Bridge’s glow.
Meanwhile, in the more mountainous regions near Lake Bled and the Julian Alps, the weather dips below freezing. Lake Bled is magical in December: surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and far more pleasant without huge crowds. One of the annual highlights is the lake’s "Christmas Eve Bell" event, rooted in local legend. Locals light candles and enjoy as they float on the lake – a truly beautiful experience.
Or, if you want to seek thrills, December is the beginning of skiing and snowboarding season in the Alps. Despite attracting large, dedicated ski fans each year, it’s much quieter here than in France, Austria, or Switzerland. Vogel Ski Resort, nestled in Triglav National Park, is a popular spot. Plus, towns like Kranjska Gora and Maribor are ideal bases for snow sports lovers.

Denmark
by Agalya Your Denmark Guide
December in Denmark is pure magic - chilly air, the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds drifting through the streets, and Christmas lights twinkling in every corner.
Starting off the December month, the first Advent Sunday brings the lighting of Denmark’s largest Christmas tree right in the heart of Copenhagen. The magical Tivoli Gardens transform into a winter wonderland, and December in the capital city of Copenhagen feels like stepping into a Christmas fairytale.
One of the highlights you absolutely can’t miss is the Santa Lucia Parade in the Copenhagen Canals. A fleet of boats gliding through the canals, all beautifully lit up, with carolers singing traditional Saint Lucia songs. It’s an experience that fills you with warmth despite the cold, and it’s truly unique to Denmark.
The Christmas markets are spread across the city, offering a variety of treats, handmade crafts, and holiday decorations. You can find everything from beautifully crafted gifts to traditional Danish foods like Æbleskiver (fluffy pancake balls) and Gløgg (a spiced mulled wine). These holiday Danish Christmas treats are only available during the Christmas season, so don’t miss out on indulging a little (or a lot).
Yes, the weather is cold. Denmark’s December temperatures hover around 4°C, and you’ll likely face a mix of rain, snow, and overcast skies. The winds can be brisk, so layering up is essential.
The first three weeks of December in Denmark get quite busy. By the last week of December, things quiet down as Danes celebrate Christmas at home with their loved ones. Many shops, attractions, and restaurants close on the 24th, 25th, and 26th, and Christmas markets wrap up a few days before the holiday.
In short, December in Denmark offers a holiday experience like no other. It’s hard not to fall in love with this place.

France has a lot to offer when it comes to December travels. From postcard-perfect snowy villages in the Alps to the colorful, fairytale Christmas markets of the Alsace region, and the relaxed seaside charm of the French Riviera, the country is a fascinating mix of experiences.
Those looking for a valuable mix of December festivities and some winter sun would appreciate everything that Nice has to offer. The temperature in winter is usually mild, and cafes keep terraces open for a cup of coffee after a stroll through the Christmas fairs. There are plenty of them in the main squares of the city, with the market on Place Massena being the heart of festivities. The coast sees a lot of wild-water swimmers too!
Those seeking a more traditional feel of Christmas are welcome to visit Alsace and, in particular, the postcard-perfect Strasbourg, which hosts one of the oldest and most renowned Christmas markets in Europe. Alternatively, for a cozier feel, the same region has lots of scenic villages, one of them being Colmar. This is a lovely location in December, with people mingling, shopping, and enjoying food from street vendors.
Those who appreciate active December vacations are welcome to explore villages in the Alps closer to the Swiss and Italian borders. The region is among the favorites for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. And after an active day, there’s nothing better than snuggling up by the fire.
Finally, there’s always Paris, which brims with activities in December. One particular event to look forward to is the Festival du Merveilleux, which features a variety of performances, carousels, and delicious street food. Supported by the Museum of Fairground Arts, the event offers a chance to explore the museum’s unique collections in ways otherwise accessible only through guided tours during the rest of the year.
Switzerland

One wintery destination that should come to mind for December is the beautiful mountainous location of Switzerland. Switzerland has a bit of everything for everyone in December, which makes it a great place for Winter. Such festivities, activities and things to do include visiting the large Christmas markets in Basel, Zurich and Montreux, staying at mountain resorts for winter activities, relaxing at local spa facilities and enjoying the stunning scenery while exploring.
Zurich is one of the biggest Christmas markets in Switzerland, held throughout the whole of December. But all of the local markets in the country include the very best swiss fondues you can taste, local homemade gifts to buy and live music to listen to, so choosing any of them will be a great day out. It can be cold with minus temperatures, so wrapping up warm for the large cities is a must.
For Winter activities, skiing and snowboarding comes to mind, with many snowy locations to do this. Some winter locations include Zermatt (even for non-skiers), San Bernardino and Davos. For all ages, you can also adventure down the mountains on toboggans, such as at Mount Rigi and in Bergun. Another winter activity is to try snowshoe trekking, with special clip on rackets for your shoes to be able to hike long distances in the snow. It’s quite fun and lets you explore unique routes through the Alps.
There are also destinations within Switzerland that have a lot of sunshine, such as in Lugano Switzerland. This is located in the southern canton of Ticino, bordering Italy. Here it’s perfect if you are looking for some winter sunshine surrounded by palm trees in Switzerland instead.

Lech is the picture-perfect village you see in postcards and Christmas jigsaw puzzles. I've been to Europe many times, but this place honestly took my breath away!
Surrounded by the snowy alpine mountains, it is a wonderful vacation spot for all ages and ideal for those who want to venture into winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding. Lech has extensive ski areas that are highly versatile and equally popular among families, free riders, and ski tourers. For reference, my first time skiing was in Lech, but the trainers there were excellent and I had such a great time, I honestly wouldn't have had it any other way!
If you decide to go to Lech, bring thermals, and make sure you wear at least three to four layers as it snows quite a bit. You can also rent all the skiing gear from the locals, including jackets and trousers, which might help bring down the size of your suitcase.
For activities, Lech is all about the slopes. Winter sports are a must at this destination! Despite what you might be thinking, Lech is not overly crowded in December, and I had plenty of space to learn how to ski, and the pros had plenty of space to do their thing. Crowds were never an issue during any part of the trip.
Expect fine-dining restaurants, luxurious hotels, and, of course, epic skiing at Lech. It's a pricy vacation but a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will never forget.
Belgium

There's something truly enchanting about visiting Belgium in December. The air is crisp, the streets are adorned with twinkling lights, and the scent of warm waffles and mulled wine fills the air. Belgium transforms into a winter wonderland, making it the ideal destination for festive celebrations.
One of the most beautiful places in Belgium is its capital city - Brussels. Here you can visit Winter Wonders, one of Europe's most renowned Christmas markets. Enjoy and stroll through over 200 charming stalls offering handcrafted gifts, delicious local treats, and festive beverages.
Skating enthusiasts can take a spin on the ice rink, while those looking for a thrill can hop on the Ferris wheel for a bird’s eye view of the beautifully lit Grand Place.
Next, head to Bruges, often described as a fairytale town. December brings an added layer of magic with its annual Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival. Wander through the cobbled streets, taking in the historic architecture dusted with snow. Don’t miss a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city, where you can snuggle under a blanket as you explore this quaint town.
Ghent is another city that also offers a unique festive experience with its Light Festival, where the city's buildings and canals are transformed by stunning light installations. This vibrant display runs throughout December, showcasing a mix of modern and traditional festive themes.
All these places are just an hour or so from Brussels by train.
Belgium is as much about its culinary delights as its visual splendour. Indulge in rich chocolates, sample a variety of local beers, or savour a hearty bowl of Flemish stew. Pair your meals with locally brewed Trappist ales for the complete Belgian experience.
Sweden

Sweden is a fantastic December destination, combining cozy holiday traditions, stunning winter landscapes, and prime opportunities to see the Northern Lights. In cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg, holiday festivities are in full swing with traditional Christmas markets selling pepparkakor (ginger cookies), glögg (mulled wine), and handmade crafts. Sweden also celebrates Lucia Day on December 13, where Swedes dress in full length gowns for candle-lit processions.
Sweden is a beautiful and special country to visit anytime of year, but the chance to see the Northern Lights really sets it apart. You’ll have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights if you travel north, ideally above the Arctic Circle. Destinations like Kiruna and Absiko are known for their Northern Lights displays during the winter months.
For those traveling above the Arctic Circle, Abisko is well worth a visit to try to witness the Northern Lights. It’s especially popular thanks to its unique Blue Hole, a phenomenon where the sky above Abisko is unusually clear, offering higher odds of seeing the lights. Visitors to Abisko National Park can enjoy the tranquility of the snow-covered landscapes with fewer crowds, as December tourism is lower in these remote areas.
When you’re not trying to see the Northern Lights, you can explore Abisko National Park, try your hand at ice climbing, or go cross country skiing through the snow. There isn’t much daylight during December, so when the sky is dark you can warm up in one of the country’s many saunas.
The weather in northern Sweden is very cold, often dipping below -15°C (5°F), with limited daylight hours. It's essential to dress in warm layers, insulated snow boots, and high-quality outerwear to stay comfortable and protect against frostbite. Crowds are rare, but accommodations in the region can book up due to limited options, so planning ahead is advisable.

Oman

Oman is such an amazing, yet underrated destination. Oman offers you a city escape, a vast desert region, mountains, and beaches, all in one neat package. October to March is the best season to visit this country and December is a great option. The average temperature in the capital Muscat at this time of year is a warm 23°C, reaching highs of 27°C. Perfect for city sightseeing, relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea, and visiting the mountains and the desert area. The nights are cold both in the mountains and desert regions.
I would recommend a road trip across Oman to experience the beauty of this underrated destination. This could be from 5-10 days. You will most likely fly into Muscat, the capital city to enter Oman. It is easy to rent a car at the international airport itself. The roads are wide and of good quality across the country.
Oman is an attractive destination for an outdoor enthusiast. Spend a couple of days at Jebel Akhtar or Jebel Shams, the mountains that lie to the north of Muscat. You can hike, rock climb, and soak in the views of the canyon. Spending a night or two in a desert camp is the best way to experience life in Wahiba Sands, the vast desert region in the middle of Oman. Dune bashing and star gazing will be your highlights here. You can stop at a couple of wadis and fishing villages on your way to the desert.
Finally, there are many cultural attractions in Muscat including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. You must also indulge in local cuisine in the capital city.
Thailand
By Nofar Ronen at Traveling outside the box
We visited Thailand twice in December, and it’s, without a doubt, one of the best months to travel to the country. December offers ideal weather across most regions, especially in northern Thailand, Bangkok, and the western coast. December to February marks the peak season, so prices tend to be higher, and hotels can reach full capacity. It’s highly recommended to book flights and accommodations well in advance to save on costs.
Thailand is a destination that truly has it all: stunning beaches, lively beach parties, street food, excellent restaurants, massive shopping malls, thrilling outdoor adventures, luxury resorts, and beautiful nature. This makes it a perfect spot for young travellers, friends, couples, and families alike.
Regions to Explore
The Islands: Known for their pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, street food, nature, and water activities.
Bangkok: Thailand’s bustling capital offers a mix of culture, culinary delights, large malls, grand palaces, temples, markets and unique cafes.
Northern Thailand: Ideal for adventure activities, such as mountain trekking, ziplining, biking, and visits to elephant sanctuaries.
Suggested Itineraries
For a month-long trip in December, here’s a recommended route:
Bangkok → Kanchanaburi → Phuket → Phuket Town → Koh Yao Yai → Khao Sok National Park → Khao Lak → Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Pai
If you’re more interested in the beach party scene, you’ll be happy to know that December 2024 will feature *two Full Moon Parties* on Koh Phangan. Here’s an itinerary that includes the eastern coast for easy party access:
Bangkok → Ayutthaya → Hua Hin → Koh Samui → Koh Phangan → Phuket Town → Koh Phi Phi → Phuket Town → Chiang Mai → Pai.
December Celebrations
Although Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country, Christmas is celebrated in tourist hotspots like Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui. Expect festive decorations, light displays, parties, and special meals at hotels and restaurants.
December in Thailand is a perfect blend of great weather, cultural events, and vibrant atmospheres, making it one of the best times to experience the country’s diverse offerings.
Japan
by Lo Lee from Carry Oner
December is one of the best months to visit Japan, with cultural traditions, festive holiday cheer, and exciting winter activities. The capital city of Tokyo doesn’t get very cold, making it comfortable to explore in stylish winter attire without the bite of extreme chill.
For an authentic cultural experience, Japan’s has longstanding traditional festivities happening throughout the month! On December 2nd and 3rd, the Chichibu Night Festival displays Japanese culture with large floats and fireworks. Further south, the Kasuga Wakamiya Festival on December 17 at Kasuga Taisha in Nara showcases ancient Japanese dance performances, a tradition held since 1136!
If you are looking for a winter wonderland, you can find lower temperatures and tons of powdery snow in Hokkaido! The island features lots of affordable world-class ski resorts for those who are into winter sports. Additionally, because of the cold weather in December, you can fully enjoy one of the most rejuvenating Japanese traditions: soaking in Japanese hot springs, commonly referred to as onsen.
December also brings festive Western-style Christmas markets to Japan, especially in cities like Tokyo and Fukuoka, where you can shop for seasonal snacks and handcrafted holiday gifts. Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea Christmas-themed events are a seasonal highlight that can be accessed with affordable half-day tickets!
In Japan, I found the crowds in December more manageable than during peak tourist months like May. However, popular spots such as Tokyo’s famous Gyukatsu Motomura still have lines!
Psst: We also have a 1 day itinerary for Kyoto and Osaka
India
by Plan Ashley Go
If you are looking for a unique vacation this December that combines the fun elements of a beach vacation with culturally immersive experiences, Kerala on the southwestern coast of India is your best bet. Kerala has the most amazing scenic coastal panorama with its large Chinese fishing nets, calm backwaters, and abundant tropical greenery. Kerala’s beaches like the crescent-shaped Kovalam Beach, Varkala Cliff-Side Beach, Alappuzha Beach, and Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach (one of BBC’s top 6 Drive-in Beaches in the World) attract tourists from all over the world.
Culturally, Kerala was the epicenter of the ancient spice trade making it a melting pot of cultural influences. A stroll through Fort Kochi is all you need to revisit the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial reminiscences in India. From its architecture to its food, Fort Kochi is a lesson in history by itself.
December is a particularly fun time to visit Kerala. The weather is pleasant with an average daytime temperature of 81 °F (27 °C) and sparse rain. It is the best time for outdoor activities like water sports, houseboat rides, and culture tours.
While India may seem like an odd country to spend the holiday season in, Kerala has some unique festive vibes for you to make the time special. The most vibrant of the festive splendor in Kerala is the Cochin Carnival, a grand celebration and exhibition of Kerala’s culture, food, and crafts. The carnival is conducted from 23rd December to 1st January every year with parades, art performances, and competitions on each day. New Year’s Eve is the most spectacular night with Kerala’s unique tradition of burning the effigy of an old man called “Pappanhji,” a ritual that represents the passing of the year.
South Korea
by Emma from Emma Jane Explores
South Korea is a magical destination in December. Though December might be the low season for travelling to this beautiful country there’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained. South Korea isn’t traditionally a destination we think of when it comes to Christmas, however the celebrations and decorations here are world-class. One of the best sights in Seoul in December is the normally tranquil Cheonggyecheon Stream transformed into a stunning display of floating Christmas light displays. The colder winter months also provide plenty of excuses to experience the hearty, smoky Korean-style barbecue restaurants that line the streets, though beware – you will come out smelling like smoked meats!
One of Seoul’s main tourist attractions is a day trip out to the infamous DMZ and surrounding areas where people come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of the hermit kingdom of North Korea. There’s something even more fitting about making this trek in winter as the harsh, icy weather seems to match the dismal sparsity of the divided Korean countries.
Of course, South Korea is much more than just its capital, Seoul, although you could certainly justify a lengthy stay in the city before venturing further afield. The coastal southern region of Busan is a fabulous December destination as the famous beaches are no longer full of tourists and the crowds have gone home for the year. In Busan there is so much to do including visiting the vibrant Gamcheon Culture Village, exploring the Jagalchi Fish Market and getting in touch with the spiritual side of Korea at Haedong Yonggungsa – a large temple complex built on the rocky coastline. Busan also has a fabulous display of Christmas lights and a celebratory atmosphere in December. The streets are full of street food vendors, making the city a great place to sample lots of different elements of Korean cuisine.
Indonesia
by Ossama from Awesome Traveler
There are 17,000 Island in Indonesia. However, Bali is one of the most visited island in the country. How big is Bali compare to the actual size of Indonesia you might ask. It covers 5,780 square kilometers while Indonesia is 1904568.48 square kilometers. Despite its small size , it is an important island as it attracts million of visitors each year, specially in December.
The weather of Bali in December is warm that hovers between 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F), making it a good condition to swim and explore marine life, such as snorkeling and scuba diving. This is one of the reasons why visiting Bali in December is a good decision.
There are many holiday festivities that take place in December, such as Denpasar Festival, which takes place in the island’s capital. At the end of December, locals dress nicely to attend this festival, so they can taste some local produces, culinary delights, attend cultural parade, music concerts and dance performances. It is a good time of year to taste some delicious Balinese food and learn about its cultural heritage. The festival gets crowded with thousands of visitors as there are people from all walk of earth attend the festival.
Another important celebration is the Penuteran Bay Festival, which takes place in the mid of December. This nautical celebration aims to promote the beauty if diving spots and marine life in the island. Thus, het your diving gears ready for an experience of a life time. You can spot many coral reefs habitats and marine life in the coastal side of the island. It is an experience of a life time, so do not miss it.
Not to forget, the Pandawa Beach Festival that takes from 25 December to 1 January. It is one of the biggest beach events in Bali that takes place Pandawa beach for approximately a week. Many locals and tourists attend this festival to observe cultural parade, art performances, and local food bazaar.
Sri Lanka
by Melissa from Mountains And Mahals
December is one of the best times to visit Sri Lanka, especially if you want to explore the popular beach towns in the south and west of the island. The monsoon season has ended, bringing sunny days and calm seas with temperatures around 27-30°C (80-86°F). Perfect conditions for sightseeing and beach time along Sri Lanka’s picturesque coastline.
The holiday season brings a festive atmosphere to Sri Lanka, though as a predominantly Buddhist country, Christmas celebrations are mainly found in larger hotels and tourist areas, like Colombo and bigger beach towns. You can also experience unique local celebrations like the Unduvap Full Moon Poya in mid-December, when Buddhists visit temples and participate in religious ceremonies. The full moon creates a magical atmosphere at ancient sites like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
New Year’s Eve is a big event as well, with resorts and hotels hosting parties and sometimes beachside fireworks. If you’re spending New Year’s at a hotel make sure to book in advance, as these events can be popular.
If you’re a nature lover, December is a great time to visit national parks. Yala National Park is famous for its leopard population, and December falls within one of the best times to spot them. If you’re interested in marine wildlife, December is also an excellent month for whale watching in Mirissa. The waves in the beach towns along the south and west coasts are also calm enough for swimming, snorkeling, and even beginner surfers.
Crowd levels vary across the country in December. While coastal towns and popular tourist spots can get busier due to the high season, there’s still plenty of space to explore more off-the-beaten-path destinations like the central highlands or less-visited beaches, like Tangalle. In cultural cities like Kandy and the Cultural Triangle (which includes Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya), the weather is cooler and drier, making it pleasant for sightseeing and hiking.

Morocco
Recommended by Elena of My Places to Visit
One of the best countries to visit in December is Morocco. December is considered the shoulder season in Morocco, meaning fewer tourists and better accommodation deals, compared to the summer months. Temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius and are much more pleasant than the summer heat, but the evenings are cold, so keep that in mind.
Although Christmas is not really celebrated Morocco has its own winter festivals which turn the city into a festive atmosphere. If you visit Morocco in the part of December do not miss Tan-Tan Moussem festival. In traditional Berber culture, a Moussem is a type of annual fair with economic, cultural and social functions. It takes place in Tan-Tan, a desert town in south-western Morocco. This event is happening annual since 1963 and more than 30 tribes from southwestern Morocco and other parts of northwest Africa participate in different workshops, camel rides, dance or storytelling.
If you visit Morocco in the middle of December is held the Marrakech International Film Festival. Movie screenings take place at Jemaa el Fna square as early as 11am during the week-long festival.
If you'd like to celebrate Christmas in Morocco is good to know that Christmas midnight masses are held at the churches in the most big cities like Casablanca and Rabat. Local Moroccan music accompanies the service with traditional hymns in it.
Christmas dinner with a mixture of Moroccan and western dishes combined is held in most restaurants and hotels located within the touristic areas. In some cities Santa Claus goes around riding a camel.
I highly recommend to spend New Year in Morocco. The tradition is to celebrate New Year’s event under the stars in the Sahara Desert. You won’t forget this magical festive night and you'll keep the good memories forever.
Tunisia
By Maria of MapAndCamera
If you’re looking to escape the cold, Tunisia in December is like a well-kept secret. While everyone else flocks to Europe’s crowded Christmas markets or tropical beach getaways, you’ll be enjoying Tunisia’s mild, pleasant weather. During December, temperatures stay around a comfortable 15-20°C (59-68°F). The sun shines bright, but it’s not scorching, making it perfect for exploring all day. You can stroll through ancient ruins or along the coastline without layers of winter gear or beads of sweat.
One of the absolute highlights? The peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere. Most tourists don’t realize how lovely the country is this time of year, so you'll have Tunisia’s iconic sites practically to yourself. Picture walking through the Roman amphitheater in El Djem or the historic ruins of Carthage with barely anyone around. And if you're a fan of desert landscapes, the Sahara Desert is especially stunning in December—cooler, more inviting, and endlessly photogenic.
The bustling markets are filled with colorful goods, seasonal treats, and the warm aroma of spices. It’s the kind of local charm that draws you in and makes you feel like you've discovered something truly special.
I remember visiting in December and being captivated by Sidi Bou Said’s iconic blue-and-white streets. Without the typical summer crowds, it felt like the town was all mine. The Mediterranean Sea glimmered under the soft winter sun, and I could linger over coffee in charming cafes without a rush.
If you’re craving a winter escape with a touch of adventure, Tunisia in December is the place to go. It’s the perfect mix of culture, history, mild weather, and peaceful exploration. Why freeze back home when you can soak up some sunshine and soak in history?

New Zealand

New Zealand, a small island nation close to Australia, will leave you spellbound with its diverse landscapes and picture-perfect views—vibrant blue lakes, rugged mountains with glaciers, golden beaches, bright blue lakes, and lush forests stretch as far as the eye can see. People are friendly and laid-back, the food is delicious, and there is so much to see.
New Zealand is not about the cities but exploring the stunning outdoors, and December is the perfect month for that since it's the start of summertime. Summers are relatively mild, with over 15 hours of daylight and daytime temperatures ranging between 20-25ºC.
A road trip across the North and South Islands is the best way to experience New Zealand. With bright, sunny long days, it's the perfect time to do just that. Adventure lovers can do epic hikes, bungee jump, skydive, and kayak in glacial waters—the options are endless. If you’re not big on adventure, you’ll still enjoy the leisurely drives with plenty of scenic spots to relax.
Christmas festivities are very low-key in New Zealand—it's beach barbecues and outdoor picnics instead of snow and city lights. However, New Year's can be lively, especially if you spend it in a city like Queenstown, which is known for its fun vibe, nightlife, and fireworks.
Since December is peak travel season, it’s a good idea to plan your trip far in advance. While New Zealand doesn’t feel as crowded as places like New York or London, hotels in small towns can book up quickly. Aim to reserve accommodations 5-6 months in advance. If it's a last-minute trip, hiring a campervan is your best bet!
If you’re craving a summer adventure with breathtaking scenery and endless outdoor activities, New Zealand in December won’t disappoint.
Australia
by Raksha from Solopassport
Australia is the best country to visit in December if you wish to experience Christmas in the summer season. Australian Christmas is unique as it is celebrated with barbecues, beach gatherings, and outdoor family events. The festivities are seen everywhere with sales and decorations.
With warm and long days, December is an ideal time in Australia for outdoor activities and festivals. Plenty of outdoor attractions, like exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Twelve Apostles, become easily accessible. The month also marks the beginning of the school holidays, which makes the cities livelier with people spending a lot more time outside.
December in Australia is the summer season and is usually hot. The temperature in the northern parts of Australia range between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius where most of the days are bright and sunny. Queensland experiences tropical weather. These days invite the beachgoers to sunbathe and swim in the ocean. The temperature in the south like Melbourne is a lot cooler than the north and has temperatures ranging between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
December is a peak travel season, as it’s both summer and the holiday period. The cities in Australia have Christmas decorations and markets, bringing the locals and the communities together. Popular attractions like Bondi Beach, the Blue Mountains, and the Gold Coast can get crowded. And the hotels and flights are usually very expensive during this time. Sydney is specifically known for its New Year fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, where tourists from all over the world flock to the city. If you wish for lesser crowd, then Tasmania and Western Australia are wonderful options.
