The Americas

Canada

by Jessica Schmit from Uprooted Traveler

While most tourists flock to Canada in July and August, May is actually a lovely time to visit the country, with warmer weather, few crowds, and a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy.

For example, head to Whistler, a stunning ski village in British Columbia. Come May, the town offers the best of both worlds—warmer temperatures at lower elevations and, in most years, decent snow remaining on its slopes. Whistler actually enjoys one of the longest ski seasons in Canada, allowing you to glide down the mountains amidst fewer crowds and with serious discounts on lift tickets. Plus, the town is surrounded by gorgeous landscapes of the dramatic, fjord-like Howe Sound, temperate rainforests, and alpine lakes. Take advantage of the nice weather by exploring some of the lower-elevation hiking trails in the area, like Mamquam Falls Trail, which leads you to a waterfall of stunning turquoise water.

Alternatively, for one of the most unique things to do in the country in May, head to Newfoundland on the eastern side of the country, where you can see two jaw-dropping things at once—icebergs and whales. May is the best time to see massive icebergs in the Labrador Sea, as they break off from Greenland and float towards Canada’s coastline. This area also happens to be one of the best places on the planet for whale watching, with a stunning array of whales, including beluga, minkes, humpbacks, fin whales, and sperm whales.

Of course, it would be wrong to mention May in Canada without addressing Victoria Day, which commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria. If you really want to get in the spirit, head to Victoria on Vancouver Island, where you’ll find an annual parade and other festivities in honor of its matriarchal namesake.

Nicaragua

by Alex from Adventure to Every Country

Nicaragua is a great country to visit in May, as this is right on the cusp of the rainy season, which means smaller crowds and cheaper prices (in a country that’s already very cheap). Temperatures are warm averaging around 29 degrees throughout the day. Visiting at the beginning of the month is advisable to minimize the chances of overlapping with the rainy season.

Nicaragua is full of incredible activities. It is the only place in the world where you can join a tour to go volcano boarding and board down a volcano at speeds of up to 70 km per hour. An awesome activity!

If you’re feeling adventurous, but not quite enough to speed down a volcano, then you can instead visit Volcan Masaya, where you can peer into the crater and see bright orange lava at the bottom. A truly incredible sight.

No Nicaragua trip is complete without a visit to Ometepe Island. This natural paradise is home to two large volcanos which can be hiked up: Concepcion and Maderas. It is also the scene of Charco Verde ecological reserve - a wildlife-rich area full of animals including howler monkeys and boa constrictors.

For something more relaxing, the colonial cities of Leon and Granada are worth spending some time in. Do a free walking tour to learn all about each city, and where the best spots are. Leon in particular has a large cathedral (Leon Cathedral) with great sunset views from the roof.

Or you can surround yourself with nature by staying at the Treehouse hostel, which has great views of the surrounding jungle.

In May you can also attend the Palo de Mayo (Maypole) festival at Bluefields on the Caribbean coast. This celebration sees locals perform dance parades whilst wearing colourful clothing and sharing Caribbean food. Bluefields is around a 7-hour drive from the capital Managua.

Antigua

by Sara from Big Adventures with Little Feet

Antigua is in the middle of the Caribbean islands.  It is an ideal winter destination and is one of the easiest-to-reach islands with direct flights to the UK, Europe and the USA.  It has an amazing 365 beaches to choose from.  They have incredible snorkelling and diving as well as stunning landscapes for hiking and adventure sports such as sailing and kitesurfing.  There are also many delicious local restaurants, artisan shops and historical sightseeing experiences such as Nelson’s Dockyard.

Why is Antigua one of the best countries to visit in May?

  1. Still very warm and dry without the crowds

  2. Low-season rates for accommodation and cheaper flights

  3. Quieter beaches and fewer people at the major tourist attractions

Weather in Antigua in May

May is Spring time in Antigua and the weather is starting to get hotter and there is a small chance of light showers.  Don’t forget a lightweight raincoat.  The temperature sits at a warm 24-30 degrees Celsius or 75-86 Fahrenheit.  So don't forget your sunscreen.

It’s still very warm, sunny and mostly dry with temperatures between

Things to do in Antigua in May:

  1. Explore some of the 365 beaches that Antigua has to offer either by hiring a car to tour the island, or joining a boat tour

  2. Swim and snorkel with stingrays at Stingray City, one of the only places in the world where you can get up close and personal with these beautiful animals.

  3. Delve into the history of Antigua with a visit to Nelson’s Dockyard a UNESCO World Heritage Site in English Harbour and if you’re feeling energetic climb up to Fort Berkeley for amazing views.

  4. Learn to sail either dinghies at the National Sailing Academy or yachts at OnDeck.  Did you know that Antigua is one of the busiest yachting communities in the Caribbean?

  5. Get an adrenaline fix, by flying through the air on the zip line course in the lush rainforest on the east coast of Antigua.

Mexico

by Lucy and Dan from Thoroughly Travel

Nestled between the USA and Central America, Mexico is a vast and diverse country and one of the best places to visit in May. May is the beginning of the rainy season in Mexico, but the weather is only getting warmer. There may be more consistent rain on the east coast but this time is before the hurricanes set in; while the Baja peninsula is consistently pleasant year-round. Due to being off-peak, May in Mexico sees lower prices and fewer crowds. This is advantageous if you’re heading to popular resort destinations like Cancun or Tulum, or if you’re following well-trodden backpacking routes. The cities of the Yucatan peninsula, such as the colonial towns of Merida and Valladolid, are much quieter in May than the peak season of December-April. These are great bases for visiting iconic Mayan sites like Chichen Itza and Uxmal. There are also several beautiful cenotes (sunken swimming holes) in this area to explore. The vibrant capital, Mexico City, is also perfect in May, offering long sunny days for sightseeing. The Baja California Sur peninsula is perhaps the best part of Mexico in May, as the diving season in Cabo Pulmo is about to begin and larger pelagic species can be spotted. Although whale season in Baja has come to an end by May, it is the perfect time to swim with large groups of migrating mobula rays. Those keen to dive and snorkel on the east coast can head to Isla Cozumel or Holbox, where the waters are clear and calm, and the beaches are long and empty.

United States

by Mayuri from Fernwehrahee

Visiting the United States in May is one of the most delightful experiences. Most of the country experiences pleasant weather during the month. May marks the transition from spring to summer in many parts of the country. It's a time when temperatures start to rise, flowers bloom, and outdoor activities become more popular. With pleasant weather in many states, May is a popular month for holidays. It is the perfect time to visit the National parks, and beaches of Florida and hike the trails. If you love outdoor destinations, it is the perfect time to visit the natural beauty of the United States. Also, due to the pleasant climate, it is the best time to visit the cities of New York, San Fransisco, Chicago, Las Vegas New Orleans, and more.

As spring breaks get over in April, the crowd becomes thinner during the month. This means you will get accommodation at cheaper prices.

Also, Memorial Day is celebrated in the USA on the last Monday of May month, honoring and remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is marked by ceremonies, parades, and visits to cemeteries and memorials. If you’re in the capital of the USA, Washington DC, don’t miss the National Memorial Day Parade that runs down Constitution Avenue.

Psst: BRB has a lot of resources about the US!

Peru

by Melanie The World Travel Girl

Peru, located on the western coast in South America is a must visit place offering a blend of history, wildlife and culture. There are many things to do in Peru like learning about the Inca civilization at Machu Picchu, exploring the Amazon rainforest, visiting the floating reed islands of Lake Titicaca, or flying over the Nazca Desert to see the Nazca lines.

For the most part, the weather in May is mild and dry. In Cusco, highs are 65-70 Fahrenheit (18-21 Celsius), 60-71 Fahrenheit (16-21 Celsuis) in the capital of Lima and 70-85 Fahrenheit (21-29 Celsius) in the Amazon., with occasional rainfall making the rainforest even more lush and green. This is an ideal time to explore all the outdoor places in Peru.

The peak tourist season is from June to August, so visiting in Peru usually means the crowds are manageable. You will have more space to explore without feeling overcrowded at Machu Picchu or the Sacred Valley. Tours into the Amazon will be less congested, allowing a more enjoyable experience.

The Festival of the Sun, Inti Raymi, is celebrated in June, however in May you may catch some of the preparations and festivities that kick off a month in advance. On May 3rd, the people of Cusco celebrate Cruz Velacuy, where they worship the crosses found in different churches with music and dancing. The celebration of the Lord of Torrechayoc occurs on the second Saturday of May in Urubamba, where the main event is a mass held in the stadium.

Whether you're marveling at the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, trekking through the jungle and cruising the waters of the Amazon, or immersing yourself in the vibrant culture of Cusco, visiting Peru in May offers an unforgettable adventure that's waiting to be explored.

Costa Rica

by Sarah from Costa Rica Vibes

May is considered a transition month from the dry season to the rainy season in Costa Rica, but don’t let that deter you from visiting! It is actually one of the best months to travel in this Central American country.

During this time of year, the sun rises around 5:30 am. It is a good idea to get up as early as possible to enjoy the beauty of the environment. The wildlife also tends to be most active in the mornings. You can expect an afternoon rain shower that usually rolls in around 2 pm. The rain typically only lasts for an hour or two before the sun comes out again.

Around 5:30 pm you will be treated to beautiful sunset views on the Pacific Coast. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy an early dinner at a beachfront restaurant.

The temperatures on the Pacific Coast range from 75°F to 90°F during the day and hover around the mid to low 70’s °F at night.

It is a great time to visit because the landscape starts to turn lush and green again after the dry season, there are fewer tourists than in previous months, and hotel rates go down.

Some fun things to do in May in Costa Rica include:

  • Visit a national park (such as Manuel Antonio National Park) to see an abundance of wildlife.

  • Check out a waterfall. With the increase in rain, the falls will be more impressive.

  • Go zip lining. The vibrant environment is amazing from above.

There is one national holiday during this month. Dia de los Trabajadores (Labor Day) is celebrated on May 1st. Expect that many businesses will be closed, there will be parades throughout the country, and there will be occasional demonstrations.

Psst: I have the article just for you if you want to discover the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica.

Belize

by Daria from The Discovery Nut

If you want to avoid high-season crowds and enjoy lower prices, Belize is an excellent place to visit in May.

May is a shoulder month in Belize, while the rainy season hasn’t started yet, the weather is still pleasant for spending time outside and enjoying outdoor activities like climbing Mayan ruins, hiking in the rainforest and watching wildlife.

Belize is a hidden gem of Central America, which means the crowds here are lower than in places like Costa Rica or Guatemala. In May, tourism begins to die down in Belize, which means you can get better deals on hotels, guided tours and car rentals.

The economy of Belize relies heavily on tourism, and many local businesses are willing to give tourists better deals during shoulder months to earn their business.

Belize is home to the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef - the second largest barrier reef in the world that’s known for its diving and snorkeling opportunities that attract diving enthusiasts from many countries.

Snorkeling is also a popular activity in Belize, especially in Hol Chan Marine Reserve off the coast of San Pedro, the capital of Ambergris Caye. Places like Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia and Moho Caye are popular destinations for diving in Belize.

The country also boasts great Mayan ruins and a complex cave system where you can go tubing or join a guided tour to learn about ancient Mayan rituals that were taking place here.

You will need to book a tour of ATM caves because visiting this place is only possible with a guide. San Ignacio is the largest town in western Belize near the border with Guatemala.

It has access to many Mayan ruins in Belize like Xunantunich, Caracol, and Altun-Ha, where you can learn the history of Belize. It’s also a gateway to Tikal, a popular archaeological site in Guatemala that once was one of the most powerful cities in the Mayan civilization.

Europe

Greece

by Shweta from  Zest In A Tote

If you are looking for a beach vacation with stunning cultural sites, hiking and water activities, Greece fits right in. It is a good destination to visit in May due to several reasons. This is shoulder season, so the hotel prices and crowds are not at their peak. Summer in Greece, especially July and August, gets really hot during the day and is also super crowded.

In May, Greece experiences mild to warm weather depending on the region. May offers some of the best weather of the year- warm, with bright sun and very little rain. The average daily temperature ranges from 18°C to 24°C. The northern regions and islands tend to be slightly cooler, while the southern parts, including Athens and Crete, are warmer.

This mild weather is great for sightseeing the different attractions in and around Athens. The weather is comfortable enough to fully appreciate the ancient sites. If you are into hiking, May offers good opportunities to hit the hiking trails in Meteora and on different islands. Walking or trekking between sites becomes more bearable in the month of May. By May, Crete’s waters are warm enough to swim in. This is one of the larger and popular Greek islands for families.

Festivals and Events in May: Greece celebrates 1st May not just as Labour Day but also as a celebration of spring. On May 1st, bigger cities commemorate the day with processions. In the Greek countryside, you will see people going out for a picnic or just for a walk to pick flowers. On 12th May, a classic Greek festival takes place in Akotiri honouring Saint Epiphanios. This is a festival celebrating the patron saint of a particular region. The church, where the festival takes place, is beautifully adorned with flowers.

Austria

Recommendation from Nofar from Traveling Outside the Box

I think that Austria is an amazing destination all year round but we traveled there twice in May and we came to the conclusion that it is an excellent month to travel in this country.

Why should you travel to Austria in May?

  • Austria is the perfect country for hiking. If it is too hot then it makes the trip too exhausting. In May the average temperature in Austria is 20 degrees and in the mountains lower.

  • May is not the peak season in Austria (the peak months are June-August), so the prices are lower.

  • There are really beautiful places in Austria!!! But some of them are very touristy, if you come in May you can enjoy tourist places as well cause it's less crowded.

Some places I recommend to travel in Austria

  1. The capital city Vienna - this city is simply magical. With its special architecture, stunning palaces (Belvedere Palace and Schönbrunn Palace), and amazing cafes, you can do fun tours there such as a food tour, a Polaroid camera tour, a Viennese apple pie cooking workshop and more.

  2. Wachau Valley - an amazing area for hiking and cycling. You can take a tour of the wineries there and visit the monastery in the town of Melk. The valley can be reached by train from Vienna, a journey of about an hour. If you want to travel the valley by bike then there are several bike rental shops in the area.

  3. The town of Hallstatt - is one of the most famous towns in the world. It is difficult to describe the beauty of this town in words. My recommendation is to spend the night there, so you could come for a walk in the town early in the morning before it gets too crowded.

Special events in May in Austria

Vienna Festival Weeks - Wiener Festwochen -

The ultimate Austrian festival, a six-week cultural event in Vienna. 46 artistic productions and projects from the fields of theatre, opera, music, dance, performance, visual art and activism are waiting to be discovered.

France

By Louisa Loring of Eating Around Italy

Visiting France in May is one of the best countries to see in the spring with fewer crowds, lovely mild temperatures and full of local festivals and spring colors in bloom. In addition, it’s right before school ends in June, making tourist attractions, parks and top destinations less frequented by local families.

Because much of France is surrounded by the coastline, winters can be harsh and long with short days. May finally brings a breath of fresh air as temperatures warm up, making outdoor activities such as walking, city tours, biking and hiking much more accessible and enjoyable.

Southern France averages a temperature of 55-68°F (13-20°C) and while the Mediterranean is still quite cold, around 64°F (18°C), you can still expect to see early birds taking their first dips of the season. On the Atlantic coast, it’s a bit cooler with temperatures of around 50-66°F (10-19°C) but the lush countryside in Normandy and Brittany are at their best. Paris isn't much different with average days hovering around 60°F (14°C) and reaching the 70s on sunny days.

Prepare to pack and dress in layers with plenty of sweaters, scarves and light jackets, making it easy to be out all day without going back to your accommodations to change. Pack a light hat and gloves for chilly evenings but keep your down jacket at home.

Warmer weather brings an abundance of local produce, wildflowers and beautiful colors to open-air markets, a large part of Parisian and rural French culture. Be sure to carve out time to shop at weekly farmers markets and sample some of the best seasonal produce, street food and local specialties.

And of course, one of the largest parts of French culture finally comes back to life at this time of year: cafe culture. Sit for hours outdoors under the sun (or shaded from spring rains under umbrellas) at a cafe with a coffee, cocktail, soft drink and a pastry as you leisurely soak up the sun, watch the day pass and truly relax side by side with the locals.

In addition, May is when some of France’s most famous and beloved festivals take place. The Rose Festival in Chédigny (Loire Valley) is one of the most beautiful flower shows in France with over 700 different rose bushes in bloom.

The Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera is the most famous of all the festivals, a free open-air cinema showing films every day to the general public. Not only is this one of the most important festivals but it’s a great place to socialize and party.

Finally, each year at the end of May or sometimes pushed into early June, the Monaco Grand Prix takes place on the Circuit de Monaco, considered one of the most difficult race tracks in the world.

Whether you decide to stay in the city, visit the French countryside or indulge in one of the main events of the year, there is surely something to fit any itinerary and agenda in May.

Ireland

by Cath from Travel Around Ireland

A great country to visit in May is Ireland. Warmer weather, brighter days and fewer crowds than during summer make it a great place to visit. Irish weather can be notoriously unpredictable but if there is a month where you are likely to experience less rain, it is May. May is one of the driest months in Ireland and temperatures lie around 13-15C (55-59F).

With days getting longer than previous months, it means more daylight for sightseeing as well. And in Ireland, there is plenty to see and do. With the summer crowds yet to descend on the island, places such as the Cliffs of Moher, the Giant’s Causeway and Blarney Castle are a pleasure to visit.

Stately homes with gardens may still have beautiful bluebells in bloom, and other flowers are springing to life across the country in places such as Emo Court and Lismore Castle. With May experiencing more settled weather, the West Coast of Ireland becomes a more pleasurable place to visit, with the Wild Atlantic Way offering miles and miles of beautiful coastline to visit on a road trip.

There are a few notable festivals in Ireland during May including the Kilkenny Roots Festival, Uisneach Bealtaine Fire Festival and Listowel Writer’s Week. May is considered part of the shoulder season in Ireland, meaning fewer crowds and slightly more palatable prices.

Accommodations such as hotels in Dublin with rooftop bars for enjoying the sunset after a day’s exploring are more readily available and better priced than during the summer high season. So, if you were ever thinking of visiting Ireland, May is a great time of the year to do it to beat the summer crowds and enjoy the tourist attractions at your leisure.

Malta

by Robyn from Two Empty Passports

The Mediterranean Island of Malta is one of the best countries to visit in May. Often overlooked by travelers, this charming destination has stunning landscapes, crystal blue waters, a rich culture, and warm hospitality.

While Malta can be enjoyed year-round, the weather in May is warm and sunny. Temperatures range from 20–25°C (68–77°F), perfect for exploring the island’s natural pools, historic ruins, and picturesque towns.

Malta is also at its greenest in May, with lush plants and blooming flowers dominating the island. This makes it an excellent time for nature lovers to explore the beautiful hiking trails around Malta and Gozo.

Throughout the year, Malta hosts amazing festivals, including the Valletta Green Festival held from May 3 to 12th, 2024. This annual event sees St. George’s Square come to life with over 80,000 seasonal plants and flowers, creating a mesmerizing display in Valletta’s historical center.

If you’re looking to enjoy Malta’s gorgeous beaches and crystal waters, May is the best time to visit. With warmer temperatures, the sea is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and water sports. Head to Mellehia Bay, one of Malta’s best sandy beaches where you can rent a sun lounger, and umbrella and soak up the sun.

As May falls outside Malta's peak tourist season, you can expect a more relaxing vacation. With fewer crowds, the beaches and natural pools will be more secluded and peaceful. Lines will also be shorter at popular attractions, including the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, Popeye’s Village, and on Comino Island.

Flights and accommodations are also more affordable, including a stay at one of Malta’s adult-only hotels. That means you can treat yourself to a relaxing spa or relax at the rooftop pool at a more budget-friendly price.

Scotland

by Tabitha from Travel Compositions

Scotland in May is such a perfect time of year to visit. Spring is springing and the tourist crowds haven't come out yet!

May is considered shoulder season for travel. Summer crowds haven't arrived yet which means that attractions aren't completely sold out. In fact, in some of the popular locations we visited we had almost to ourselves like Drummond Castle Gardens and Outlander's Lallybroch, I mean Midhope Castle!

Accommodations that can fill up quickly in the summer have more availability and are priced more reasonably in May. We took advantage of being able to afford a castle stay while we were there.

The weather in May is moderate, with some drizzly rain and temperatures in the mid 50s°F, so a light jacket is probably all you'll need. But when the sun comes out it's warm and 65°F feels sweltering. Wearing layers is highly recommended.

Flowers are blooming, trees are turning green, and puffy cherry trees are in full bloom. What really stood out to me was the yellow gorse, or whins as Scots call it, that canvased the countryside in gold.

May is the beginning season of the famous Scottish Highland Games. Watch athletes caber toss and hammer throw, musicians make music with pipes and drums, and dancers display rhythmic footwork with sword dancing and the Highland Fling. You might want to plan your itinerary around one of these weekend events.

The third Saturday in May is World Whisky Day. What better country to be in than Scotland, where you can have a dram (or two!) from one of its 150 whisky distilleries? Or find a whisky bar near your accommodation instead!
If I get to visit Scotland again, I would definitely go in May again.

Serbia

by Danielle from the Amazing Traveler

During May in Serbia, the temperature is usually between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, so you don't need heating or air conditioning, but that's not the best thing about Serbia during this period. May 1st is a significant holiday and a non-working day, so cities empty out, and popular picnic spots like Kosutnjak, Ada Ciganlija, Fruska Gora, and other tourist places favored by locals are full of people barbecuing and sleeping under the open sky in anticipation of the holiday.

Almost all hotels and apartments in mountains such as Zlatibor, Divcibare, Tara, Kopaonik, and spas like Vrnjacka, Prolom, and Sokobanja are usually booked by March for May. Ie. in early March, we decided to spend the holidays in Golubac because I hadn't seen the renovated medieval fortress on the Danube, but it was fully booked, so we reserved a mountain house in Mokra Gora, near the village of Mecavnik, built by Emir Kusturica.

I'm telling you all this to explain that Belgrade and Novi Sad won't be crowded, although they are the most visited destinations by foreign tourists in Serbia. Unlike most European cities where everything is centralized, Belgrade is a polycentric city. In the center, you can see remnants from the Roman era and architecture influenced by the East. However, if you want to see Western-influenced architecture, you must go to Zemun, which normally takes an hour each way in transit but will take only half an hour during these days.

This year, Orthodox Easter is also in May, specifically on the 5th, so the first ten days of May will be festive, and you'll also have the chance to see how Easter is celebrated here if you find that interesting.

Switzerland

Contributed by Zoe from Together In Switzerland

For those seeking adventure, mountains, sunshine and lakeside activities, consider your Spring May destination to Switzerland.

Switzerland has a wide range of cities, stunning scenery, off-the-beaten-path treasures and unique things to do. Whether you want to go hiking up the mountain one day, take a scenic train through the whole country, indulge in a Swiss food tour or bathe in crystal clear waters - there’s something for everyone!

During May, Switzerland comes alive during Spring, with all-mountain gondolas, funiculars and boats in motion for visitors and locals to explore. It can be quite busy during weekends, especially in larger cities such as Zurich and Lucerne, so you should book activities like the Lindt Chocolate Museum or a Lucerne boat tour in advance. However, overall it is still very pleasant to visit Switzerland in May, and a great month to be outside exploring.

Switzerland is also home to numerous historic and famous landmarks you can visit in May, with Chillon Castle, Bellinzona Castles and Jungfraujoch being top spots worth visiting.

May is also a good month for events in Switzerland, with many music concerts, local dancing meetups, Spring hikes and special tours available at local attractions. These are linked to the usual good weather in May too, ranging from fresh mornings of 11°C to high temperatures of 25°C. In the Southern Switzerland canton of Ticino, you can expect even higher!

Due to this, we highly suggest you consider a few days in the Ticino canton. It’s less visited than Zurich, Geneva or Interlaken and has the most beautiful things to do in May. Lake Lugano is a pleasant place for a boat tour during May.

Iceland

by Sara & Ryan from Across Every Border

Iceland is sky-high on everyone's bucket list, and for good reason! It’s by far one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever visited and one that I can guarantee I’ll be returning to over and over again.

But what’s better than exploring Iceland’s beautiful landscapes? Being able to do so while avoiding the bulk of the crowds! May is the shoulder season in Iceland. The snow has mostly melted around the ring road and the days are getting longer again. You’ll even catch a glimpse of the sun here or there!

At this time tourism is beginning to pick up but still hasn’t hit its peak. Schools in Europe don’t even break for the holidays until July. This means that tours and accommodation are still fairly affordable. We won't lie, there will still be crowds. But it won't be nearly as bad as, let's say, July. So being able to visit Iceland in May means that you might still be able to get a lot of the places to yourself, especially if you visit at sunrise.

One of the best things to expect in Iceland around this time is the puffins. Iceland is famous for its puffins and they arrive on the island in April and nest until August. So you’ll be right on time in May!

Believe it or not, there are still lesser-known places in Iceland too. Take Svartifoss, for example, along the southern ring road. It’s a much more obscure waterfall than Hengifoss or Skogafoss. Or nearby to the super popular Kirkjufell, there’s a small, yet picturesque, black chapel called Budakirkja Chapel.

What I’m trying to say is that with some solid research, a detailed itinerary and a trip planned in May, you could have one hell of a time avoiding crowds in Iceland!

Lithuania

Monica from This Rare Earth

May is one of the best months to travel in Lithuania due to the lengthening daylight hours and pleasant spring temperatures, hovering around 65°F, throughout the country. The capital city, Vilnius, serves as an ideal gateway to everything that this Baltic nation has to offer.

There are plenty of things to do in Vilnius, from food markets to ornate, historic churches to educational museums. The Old Town is surprisingly walkable, and tourists can wander the cobblestone streets and explore. Discover the colorful murals adorning the streets and alleyways, a testament to Vilnius' vibrant artistic community. And definitely sample some traditional Lithuanian cuisine, savoring hearty dishes rich in flavor.

In addition to Vilnius, Kaunas is a must see. This is the second largest city in Lithuania, and is home to several historical war museums that educate visitors about Lithuania’s past.

Venturing beyond the cities, the Hill of Crosses stands as a testament to faith and resilience, with thousands of crosses dotting the landscape in a poignant display. This sacred site offers a moment of reflection amidst the tranquil countryside.

For those seeking coastal beauty, a trip to the Baltic Sea in May is a must. Explore the sandy beaches and picturesque coastline, where the crisp sea breeze invigorates the senses and offers a refreshing escape from the urban hustle. Since May is still early for the summer crowd, you will likely have the sandy shores all to yourself.

With its wealth of history, art, and natural beauty, Lithuania promises to leave travelers with a deep appreciation of this Baltic gem. Whether exploring the urban charms of Vilnius and Kaunas or stepping into the serene landscapes of the Baltic Sea and the Hill of Crosses, Lithuania has so many unique spots just waiting to be discovered.

Latvia

By Alina of World of Lina

One reason why Latvia is excellent to visit in May is the weather that brings milder temperatures compared to the colder months, but it's still not as crowded or hot as the peak summer season. It is usually pleasant, with temperatures ranging from around 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for outdoor activities and city exploration, such as visiting the gorgeous capital city of Riga.

Whether you’re taking a stroll through the picturesque Bastejkalns Park, visit the famous “Three Brothers” or try the traditional Black Balsam, there are lots of great things to do in Riga in May!

It’s also the time when the landscape comes alive with vibrant colors as flowers begin to bloom and trees regain their foliage. This makes it a picturesque time to explore Latvia's national parks such as the Gauja National Park, forests, and countryside destinations.

May falls just before the peak tourist season in Latvia, meaning fewer crowds at popular attractions and more opportunities to enjoy the country's sights and experiences without feeling overwhelmed by all the tourists. Especially seaside resorts like Jurmala tend to get very crowded in summer so visiting in May allows you to enjoy places like this in peace.

The country celebrates Labor Day on May 1st, which often includes various cultural events, concerts, and street festivals. Additionally, there may be traditional events and celebrations happening throughout the country during this time.

Italy

by Gosia from Where To Stay In Italy 101

Italy is probably one of the most popular countries to visit in Europe, and if you don’t want to experience exorbitant prices and mad crowds, you should visit outside of the high season. And there is no better time to plan your trip other than May.

May is the perfect time to snag some good deals on flights, and accommodation rates in places like Rome also tend to be much lower compared with the summer rates of July and August.

Spain

by Colleen from Then We Walked

Galicia, on Spain’s northern coast, boasts rugged coastlines, sandy beaches and a rich tapestry of history and yet remains relatively undiscovered by international visitors.

I discovered Galicia in 2013 whilst walking the Camino and have returned every year.

Roman ruins sit alongside Celtic mysticism, some of Europe's best seafood and one of the world’s most important pilgrimage sites, making Galicia the perfect destination.

For beaches head to Baiona and the islands around Vigo. For Roman history discover Pontevedra or Lugo and for the ancient Celts head to the stunning coast of Muxia. For the grandeur of pilgrimage Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, should not be missed.

Foodies will love Galicia’s culinary scene. Seafood fans will be charmed by Combarro, one of Spain's most beautiful villages. Try Galician octopus in Melide or pair fresh oysters with a glass of glorious Albariño white wine in Arcade.

May is called the month of flowers. Meadows are carpeted with wildflowers and coastal paths are awash with blooms whilst poppies, daisies and buttercups adorn hedgerows; May is perfect for hiking! May also brings colourful local festivals. Santiago de Compostela comes alive with music, dance and a traditional cattle market during the Festas da Ascensión.

The Celtic Maios Fiesta is celebrated in Pontevedra and Ourense with market stalls, lively music, and a queen-crowning ceremony.

Vigo’s festival, usually the second week in May, with its roots in pagan tradition, offers flowers, crafts, local delicacies and traditional Galician music.

May is a wonderful time to visit. Expect fewer crowds, although the weekend around 1st May (May Day) will be busy. Temperatures are milder, not yet reaching their summer highs although expect a few spring showers.

Travelling is easy with an international airport at Santiago de Compostela and regular trains and the Alsa bus network offering regular affordable travel throughout Spain.

Discover Galicia in May; I promise you’ll want to return.

Georgia

by Joanna The World In My Pocket

Georgia is a wonderful country in the Eastern part of Europe that is still waiting to be discovered by tourists. Because of this, you will never find massive crowds of tourists here, not even in May when the weather is just perfect to visit Georgia. The days are usually sunny, though the climate can vary depending on where you are in the country. It's cooler up in the mountains and warmer down by the coast. In May, the average temperature in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is around 25 degrees Celsius. In the mountains, the average temperature is 16 degrees Celsius whilst on the shores of the Black Sea, it reaches 20 degrees.

As Georgia is a relatively small country, you can easily explore more than just the capital. Tbilisi is a vibrant city with a lively atmosphere, plenty of things to see and great restaurants to dine at. You could spend an entire week here and only experience a fraction of the city. The other two larger cities in Georgia are Kutaisi and Batumi. If the weather is sunny, you should spend a couple of days in Batumi, at the seaside. If you are a nature lover, explore the hiking trails in the Caucasus mountains in and around Mestia. As a wine lover, don’t miss taking a tour in the picturesque Kakheti region, stopping off to explore the charming village of Sighnaghi and sampling some of Georgia's finest wines directly at the vineyard. Here you can also experience the highlight of the country’s hospitality by attending a traditional Georgian supra – a feast celebrating people and life itself.

In May, don’t miss the wine festivals which take over Tbilisi. Georgia is the oldest wine-producing region in the world, fermenting the grapes underground, with the skins on. The amber wine is highly cherished and celebrated during spring and also around harvest time.

Albania

by Tamara from Elated Odyssey

Don’t overlook Albania when considering the best countries to visit in May! This Balkan country is rising in popularity thanks to its rich history, stunning beaches, and attractions.

One of the best parts about a visit to Albania in May is that it’s one of the shoulder season months. This means you’ll benefit from lower prices on things such as accommodations and rental cars compared to the peak season months of July and August.

A visit during May will also be far less crowded than peak season. This allows you to enjoy attractions more comfortably and relax on beaches without swarms of tourists.

Albania’s weather conditions are also optimal for planning a trip during May. This month witnesses pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunny days. Temperatures during this time typically range from a low of 11°C (52°F) to a high of 24°C (76°F). While you may need a light jacket at night, these are ideal conditions for enjoying the outdoors.

If you’re a music fan, May is an excellent time for an Albania trip as it marks the beginning of the festival season. Poland

by Diana from Travels in Poland

Visiting Poland in May is a great choice as it begins to warm up and it is shoulder season, where tourists begin to trickle in, but not in droves, therefore allowing visitors the space and ability to move around easily. It is easier to book off-season hotel prices and still take part in tours that are less crowded.

The weather in May is when spring starts in full bloom. Temperatures are still mild, ranging from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), ideal for exploring without the summer heat or winter cold. The days are longer, giving you more sunlight to enjoy everything.

May is that sweet spot before the peak tourist season hits in June and July. You’ll encounter fewer crowds at popular sites, particularly for visits from Krakow to places like Auschwitz, the Wieliczka Salt Mine tours, or even the southern mountainside city of Zakopane which is popular for outdoor activities year-round.

May is also rich with cultural and historical events. The most notable celebration is the May 3rd Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of the first constitution in Europe and the second in the world in 1791. This day is significant in Poland’s history so expect parades, patriotic events and a general atmosphere of positivity, especially in big cities like Warsaw and Krakow.

It is worth visiting the major cities in May as crowds will be lower, but it is also worth looking into smaller cities such as Torun, a city known for gingerbread; Sopot, a Baltic sea city with great beaches; or even the eastern portion with Bialowieza Forest, which helps protects European bison.

May offers the beginning of the summer season without the crowds, ideal for doing a variety of tours, or activities in Poland. With several international airports in Poland, you can fly into a region of the country and be elsewhere in just a few short hours, ideal for exploring any part of this beautiful country.

Bosnia & Herzegovina

Recommended by Vanessa Shields of Traveling Ness

As part of the Balkans, Bosnia & Herzegovina is a country that abounds in beauty and natural wonders. In addition, it doesn’t see the hordes of crowds that many other Eastern European countries do making it an appealing country to visit especially in May. With spring in full swing, the countryside of Bosnia resembles a painting with lush forests and rivers in shades of emerald green combined with mild temperatures (63 F to 72 F) ideal for exploring on a road trip.

The two main towns to visit are Sarajevo, the largest city in Bosnia and the idyllic town of Mostar. Both have a dark history from the Bosnian War but today you’ll encounter the friendliest locals, museums, cafes, and have the opportunity to learn about how the people have recovered since the war.

Smaller towns to visit for their charm are Blagaj, Pocitelj, and Jajce or the fascinating Vjetrenica Cave. May is also a great time to see the many waterfalls at peak flow with the most notable at Kravice Waterfalls or Una National Park. There are ample places for hiking but top scenic trails include those at Cvrsnica and Visocica. Both have beautiful landscapes with the former the home to the highest lake in the country at 3,937 feet in elevation.

And no trip to Bosnia would be complete without enjoying a cup of Bosnian coffee which is very strong but quite delicious once you get used to it. Sampling tasty local dishes such as cevapi (grilled minced meat kebabs with pita bread), burek (dough stuffed with meat, cheese, & spinach), and klepe (similar to ravioli covered in a creamy garlic and yogurt sauce) are bound to put a smile on your face.

Portugal

by Haley Blackall of Where to Stay Portugal

Visiting Portugal in May offers warm sunny days with a light breeze, fewer crowds and slightly cheaper accommodation prices, especially outside of the main metropolitan areas. May in Portugal means the climate is ideal for sightseeing, not too hot, not too cold. It’s also the ideal time to road trip the country and discover cultural festivities, and the beauty of lesser-known gems alongside the Silver Coast and Alentejo regions.

Imagine wandering through the cobblestone streets of Porto, feeling the vibrancy of the historical centre and the iconic views from the Luis I Bridge of the Douro River below, or climbing the hills of the Alfama neighborhood in Lisbon, known for its romantic atmosphere and traditional Fado music. All without the discomfort of sweltering heat.

Portugal's lesser-visited regions come alive in May. The Douro Valley, for instance, is breathtakingly green, its terraced vineyards just starting to flourish. The weather is ideal for a leisurely boat ride on the Douro River, offering serene views and a taste of the region's famed wines without the summer crowds.

Similarly, Évora in the Alentejo region, with its rich history and UNESCO-listed center, becomes a quiet haven for those looking to immerse themselves in culture and history under the mild May sun.

The Azores’s hydrangea-lined lanes and thermal springs are more enjoyable in the gentle weather, and the chance to see whales and dolphins is at its peak. Don’t forget to add trekking through lush, volcanic landscapes to your list of top things to do there. Madeira, too, shouldn't be overlooked, especially with its Flower Festival showcasing stunning floral displays and celebrating the bloom of spring.

With tourism numbers lower than in the peak summer months, visiting Portugal in May means experiencing more of what the country has to offer with fewer people. It's about enjoying the warmth of the sun across this beautiful coastal country.

Jordan

Submitted by Erin from Pina Travels

May is a perfect month to visit Jordan because the weather is very pleasant. During the spring, the temperatures in Jordan aren’t too hot, or too cold. Although the temperatures will vary a bit throughout the country, in May the daily temperature is between 72°F (22°C) and 80°F (25°C).

There’s plenty of sunshine in Jordan in May and very little rain. Ideal weather like this is key for traveling in Jordan because you’ll spend lots of time outdoors visiting famous places like the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Petra

Because Jordan’s weather in May is nice, it does tend to be a busy month for tourism. Touristic areas will likely be busy with crowds. To avoid the crowds, start your days early in the morning, Or, travel toward the end of May, which is shoulder season.

On a trip to Jordan in May you’ll want to visit the country’s most famous locations. To reach Jordan, you’ll fly into Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan’s main airport just outside of Amman, the capital of the country. Start your trip by spending a few days seeing historic sites in Amman like the Roman Theatre and Amman Citadel. Then, travel south to Petra, followed by an overnight stay in Wadi Rum. Head further south to Aqaba, and finish up your trip with a visit to the Dead Sea.

May is also when an annual marathon is held in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert. The Wadi Rum Full Moon Desert Marathon is an annual race that is typically held towards the end of the month. This is a unique race because it takes place as the full moon rises over the desert landscape. Participants can join the full marathon, or the fun run (which is easier!).

Uzbekistan

by Ketki from Explore with Ecokats

The underrated gem of Central Asia – Uzbekistan is rich in history, architecture and heritage due to its location on the legendary Silk Road. Boasting intricate tiled architecture, towering minarets, sandy deserts and thriving bazaars, Uzbekistan is an off-the-beaten-path destination that is gradually becoming more and more popular with tourists.

May is a remarkable time to visit Uzbekistan, as this Central Asian gem blooms with cultural richness and favorable weather conditions. One of the main reasons May is special is the popular festival of Boysun Bahori. Celebrated in the Surkhandarya province, specifically in the mountainous region of Boysun, it has been celebrated for centuries. During this festival, songs are sung, costumes are worn, and dance shows are performed, to maintain the authenticity of older times. It is an exaltation of Uzbek culture, which is deeply rooted in its culture and history. In 2001 UNESCO recognised Boysun Bahori as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

May is one of the best times to visit the Philippines. During this time, you can enjoy a variety of vibrant festivals and exciting adventures away from the usual crowds.

One of the best things to do in May is to experience paraw sailing in Boracay. May is the last-best month to experience this traditional sailing craft. Paraw sailing is a peaceful way to witness the sunset while also connecting with the maritime heritage of the Philippines.

May is also full of colorful festivals such as Pahiyas, Flores de Mayo, and Santacruzan. These festivals bring the Philippines' rich traditions and community spirit to life with processions, floral decorations, and delicious feasts.

For diving enthusiasts, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a paradise that is in its prime in May. The clear waters offer an underwater spectacle of coral reefs and diverse marine life, showcasing one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems.

For those who prefer the mountains, hiking up Mount Pulag is a breathtaking experience. The clearer skies and manageable trails of May lead to a magical sunrise amidst a sea of clouds at the summit, providing unparalleled views of the Philippines' natural landscapes.

May is the shoulder season in the Philippines, which means fewer crowds, better value for money, and a relaxing and intimate exploration of its islands. From the white sand beaches and festive streets to the depths of the ocean and mountain peaks, the Philippines is one of the best countries to visit in May.

Nepal, nestled among the towering peaks of the Himalayas, is a great destination to visit in May. During this month, the country transitions from spring to early summer, and it’s an ideal time for travelers seeking to explore its mountains and traditions without the extreme cold of winter or the heavy rains of the monsoon season.

The weather in Nepal in May is warm (but not as hot as in the summer) and the skies are generally clear, particularly in the early part of the month, making it an excellent time for trekking and mountaineering. Temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Nature is at its most stunning during this time of year, with many flowers in bloom, including rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal.

Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit are two of the most famous long-distance treks that you can do in Nepal during this time of the year. Crowd-wise, May is a smart choice for visiting Nepal. While it is the end of the peak tourist season, the trails and cities are way less crowded than in April.

One of the most significant events in Nepal during May is Buddha Jayanti, the celebration of Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and nirvana. This festival, falling on the full moon day of the Nepali month of Baishakh (usually in May), is a deeply spiritual experience, especially in Lumbini, Buddha’s birthplace, and in Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, the Buddhist stupas in Kathmandu. Visitors can witness colorful processions, prayer ceremonies, and the lighting of butter lamps, creating a magic atmosphere.

So, why is Nepal special in May? You get great weather for hiking in the Himalayas, a big cultural festival to experience, and fewer crowds, which means you can enjoy everything more.

Turkey

Byline by Kedi from Let’s Travel to Türkiye!

It’s no secret that May is one of the best months to plan a trip to Turkey — there are fewer crowds compared to the summer months, the temperatures are very comfortable, and everything is in full bloom!

In May, the temperatures are typically a very pleasant 20C to 25C (68F to 77F) in cities like Istanbul, İzmir, and the Cappadocia region. Around the Aegean and Mediterranean coast, the weather is a little warmer, and during the second half of the month, you can even start to swim in places like Antalya, Fethiye, and Bodrum.

Likewise, May counts as Turkey’s “shoulder season,” which means that there aren’t as many crowds as the high season in July and August. This gives you the perfect opportunity to explore popular attractions like the Ephesus Ruins, Cappadocia’s valleys, and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul without waiting in long lines.

Of course, there are also plenty of events and festivals all over Turkey. Hıdırellez is an interesting folk holiday that is held at the beginning of May and celebrates the arrival of spring — it’s celebrated with dancing, traditional music, and leaping over fires!

Further south, Antalya holds both the Antalya International Theater Festival and the Sand Sculpture Festival, where hundreds of professional sand sculptors from around the world create beautiful masterpieces. Towards the end of May, Istanbul hosts two popular events: the Istanbul Music Festival and the conquest of Constantinople. The latter commemorates the turning point in the city’s history, when it was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1453 and is celebrated with fireworks, city-wide events, and historical reenactments.

Japan

by Casie from Cassie The Hag

May is a wonderful time to visit Japan. Late spring is the country’s shoulder season, so places are generally not too crowded following the busy cherry blossom season in April. At the same time, May features some of the year’s best temperatures, with sunny, pleasant weather before the rainy and humid Summer season begins. The pleasant climate makes it a good time to follow the Japanese tourist trail of Tokyo, Kyoto, Fuji, Nara and Hiroshima.

If you’re feeling adventurous, late spring is a wonderful time for hiking and exploring nature due to the mild climate. While solo travelling in Japan during May, I followed the footsteps of samurai and hiked the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail through forested mountains. I also visited the active volcanoes of Mt Aso and Kagoshima in the Kyushu prefecture.

Meanwhile, key cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto are far less crowded than April’s Sakura season, but Spring is nevertheless colouring the country with many less famous flowers still in bloom.

May is wisteria season in Japan, and the lush nature surrounding the cities is verdantly green. Mount Fuji is particularly stunning in May, especially during the Fuji Shibazakura Festival where you can see a field of pink flowers in front of the mountain.
If you visit Japan in May, I’d advise avoiding the very start of the month. The ‘Golden Week’ holiday takes place from late April to early May so top attractions and trains will be extra-crowded. That said, I was exploring Tokyo during this time and enjoyed my visit. Look out for festivals on Children’s Day, on the 5th of May, when families decorate their gardens with fish-shaped streamers.

Australia is a great destination to visit, whatever the month, but May, in particular, is an excellent time to explore its diverse landscapes and vibrant cities. While the southern regions cool down, the Northern Territory and Far North Queensland remain pleasantly warm, with Darwin reaching highs of up to 32°C (89°F).

Even in Sydney, daytime temperatures are around 20°C (68°F), and Perth and Brisbane remain warm. As May falls between peak tourist seasons, you’ll benefit from lower prices for flights, accommodation, and tours, giving you much better value for money with fewer crowds.

Each year in late May, Vivid Sydney transforms the city into a mesmerizing wonderland. Its iconic landmarks, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, come alive with colourful projections and 3D art installations that make for some amazing photos.

If you want to see something uniquely Australian, watch the Uluru Camel Cup. This quirky camel race is held against the backdrop of Uluru’s red sands, which is also the perfect setting for some spectacular sunsets. May is also the perfect time to visit Magnetic Island, home to one of the largest colonies of the iconic and instantly recognizable Koala Bear.

For adventure lovers, May brings the perfect conditions for exploring the Great Barrier Reef, with crystal clear water and abundant sea life. Flinders Ranges and the Karijini National Park both offer dramatic gorges and striking red rock formations with the chance to spot some ancient fossils.

Beach lovers are well catered for on the Gold Coast with abundant golden beaches, typically sunny days and thrilling theme parks!

Australia in May offers a delightful blend of mild weather, fewer crowds, and exciting events. Whether you’re exploring the outback, diving the barrier reef, or enjoying the lights of Sydney, this vast and diverse country promises an unforgettable experience.

Going to Morocco in May is a good choice if you're looking to enjoy its beauty easily. The weather's nice then, with temperatures from 18°C to 26°C, making it the best time for a  Morocco road trip. You can check out busy cities, peaceful beaches, and wild mountains easily.

Morocco is all happening in May including the Rose Festival at El Kelaa M'Gouna. In celebration of the rose harvest, this event in late May features parades, music, dance, and other fun activities.  It's a cool way to see Moroccan culture up close and maybe buy some rose products.

Also, the Gnaoua World Music Festival often happens in Essaouira around late May or early June. It's another great chance to dive into Morocco's culture. This festival has artists from everywhere mixing jazz, pop, rock, and Gnaoua music - a traditional Moroccan style. The vibe is lively, making it a brilliant way to see Morocco's wide range of music and talent.

There's plenty of outdoor fun to be had too. The Atlas ranges are green with blossoms and thick bushes after the winter rains. The Sahara Desert can be an alternative, where it’s neither too hot during the day nor too cool at night; so you can explore the Desert on a camel ride.

Unlike the hectic summer months, May is quite uncrowded. So visiting big spots like Marrakech and Fez is easier and you don't encounter too many people. It becomes much easier to visit all the big places from the ancient markets to the royal palaces without the crowds.

Morocco is brilliant to visit in May. It's not too crowded and the weather is perfect. There are lots of artistic events going on. You can have fun and learn more about Morocco at the same time.
